2.02 MATERIALS
SPEC NOTE: SEALTIGHT PROTECTION COURSE is a multi-ply, semi-rigid board
composed of a mineral-fortified asphaltic core formed between two outside
layers of asphalt-impregnated fiberglass mat which are weathercoated and
covered with a polyethylene anti-stick sheet. SEALTIGHT PROTECTION COURSE
will absorb the impact of aggregate shock and normal jobsite foot traffic.
SEALTIGHT PROTECTION COURSE is used in between-slab construction, such
as plaza decks, roof terraces, promenade decks, pedestrian concourses,
tunnels, floors of bathrooms, shower, kitchens and mechanical rooms, parking
garage decks, planter boxes, reflective pools and foundation walls. With
a polyethylene film facing on one side and an asphalt-saturated felt on
the other, SEALTIGHT PROTECTION COURSE offers compatibility with most
currently popular dampproofing and waterproofing materials.
A. Protection Course: multi-ply, semi-rigid board,
composed of a mineral-fortified asphaltic core formed between two outside
layers of asphalt-impregnated fiberglass mat, weathercoated and covered
with a polyethylene anti-stick sheet, 1/8 inch (3mm) thick SEALTIGHT
PC-2 or 1/4 inch (6mm) SEALTIGHT PC-3, as manufactured by W. R. MEADOWS,
INC.
B. Detail Strip: to cover joints in protection course;
SEALTIGHT DETAIL STRIP, as manufactured by W. R. MEADOWS,

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 SURFACE PREPARATION
A. Prior to application, consult the waterproofing
manufacturer to determine whether the polyethylene film facing on one
side, or the asphalt-impregnated fiberglass mat on the other side of
SEALTIGHT PROTECTION COURSE is approved as compatible to the
specific waterproofing product being placed.
B. Ensure that the waterproofing membrane is free
of sharp projections, dirt and dust. If water testing is desired, it
should be made prior to placing SEALTIGHT PROTECTION COURSE.
3.02 APPLICATION
A. Observe application information and precautions
stated in manufacturer's literature.
SPEC NOTE: Specify B. and C. for horizontal surfaces,
D. for vertical surfaces.
B. Install
PROTECTION COURSE
over the waterproofing membrane as soon as permissible by the membrane
applicator or manufacturer.
C. Butt PROTECTION COURSE sheets together and cut
to fit all intersecting surfaces and protrusions. Joints may be covered
with SEALTIGHT DETAIL STRIP or roofer's glass reinforced tape
embedded in hot asphalt as a secondary waterproofing system.
D. For dampproofed and/or waterproofed vertical walls to receive backfill,
butt joint the PROTECTION COURSE and, if necessary, temporarily hold
in place while backfilling.
3.03 BACKFILLING
SPEC NOTE: Specify A. for vertical surfaces; B.
for horizontal surfaces.
A. Backfill against vertical walls immediately,
using care and caution to avoid damaging the waterproofing application.
Do not drop backfill material against the PROTECTION COURSE in such
a manner that it could drag the sheet down as the backfill drops.
B. For horizontal applications, install the waterproofing
and the PROTECTION COURSE just prior to the installation of the wearing
surface.
3.04 PROTECTION
A. Apply PROTECTION COURSE at the end of each day's
waterproofing to both horizontal and vertical surfaces.
