BACKER ROD

SEALTIGHT CERA-ROD Nongassing, Heat-Resistant Backer Rod is a
round, flexible, continuous-length, nonabsorbent, nongassing,
nonstaining, nonshrinking, cross-linked, closed-cell polyethylene
backer rod for use in hot-pour sealing applications in joints
and large cracks in concrete and asphalt. |

1.3 REFERENCES

1.4 SUBMITTALS
- A. Comply with Section 01330 - Submittal Procedures.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
- A. Delivery: Deliver materials to site in manufacturer's
original, unopened containers and packaging, with labels clearly identifying
product name and manufacturer.

- B. Storage: Store materials in a cool, clean,
dry area indoors in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Keep
containers sealed until ready for use.

- C. Handling: Protect materials during handling
and installation to prevent damage.

2.2 MATERIALS
- A. Backer Rod: SEALTIGHT CERA-ROD Nongassing,
Heat-Resistant Backer Rod.

- 1. Description: Round, flexible, continuous-length,
nonabsorbent, nongassing, nonstaining, and nonshrinking. Extruded
from a cross-linked polyethylene.

- 2. Compliance: ASTM D 5249, Type 1.

- 3. Compression/Deflection: Approximately
25 percent at 8 psi (55.2 kPa).

- 4. Color: Red.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
- A. Examine joints and cracks to receive backer
rod. Notify Architect if conditions are not acceptable. Do not begin
surface preparation or installation until unacceptable conditions
have been corrected.
3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION
- A. Prepare joints and cracks in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions.

- B. Remove dirt and foreign matter.
3.3 INSTALLATION
- A. Install backer rod in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions at locations indicated on the drawings.

- B. Insert backer rod into joints and cracks without
stretching or puncturing.
C. Hold backer rod in compression.

- D. Rod Diameter:

- 1. Joint Widths Up to 3/4 Inch (19 mm): 1/8
inch (3 mm) larger than joint width.
2. Joint Widths 3/4 Inch (19 mm) and Larger: 1/4 inch (6 mm) larger
than joint width.
- E. Apply hot-applied joint sealants over backer
rod as specified in Section 02760.
3.4 PROTECTION
- A. Protect backer rod from damage until covered
with joint sealants.
