2.02 MATERIALS
SPEC NOTE: Use HI-SPEC Polymeric Hot-Applied Sealant for large-scale
joint and crack sealing operations in Portland Cement and asphaltic concrete
pavements because of its excellent cost efficiency long sealant life and
high return on investment. Use to seal expansion and contraction joints
in concrete highways - both transverse and longitudinal joints between
pavements and asphaltic shoulders, and random cracks. HI-SPEC has excellent
bonding properties, high resiliency, ductility and resistance to degradation
from weathering. It will not become brittle at low temperatures; will
not flow or migrate from the joint at temperatures of 140ºF (60ºC).
A. Joint Sealant: SEALTIGHT HI-SPEC Polymeric
Hot-Applied Sealant, manufactured by W. R. MEADOWS, INC.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Verify substrate conditions under provisions
of Section [ ].
3.02 JOINT OR CRACK PREPARATION
SPEC NOTE: Use A. for new construction; use B. for maintenance sealing.
Ideal joint configuration is a 2-to-1 width-to-depth ratio. Use CERA-ROD
Closed-Cell, Heat-Resistant Backer Rod to obtain proper ratio and avoid
three-sided adhesion.
A. Joints must be clean and dry. Remove contaminants
on joint surfaces by sandblasting. Blow dust, dirt and laitance out
of the joint with oil-free compressed air immediately preceding the
sealing operation.
B. Remove existing joint sealant by routing. Remove
existing backer materials and replace with CERA-ROD. Rout out joints
and cracks less than 1/4 inch (6.35mm) wide to 1/2 inch (12.7mm) minimum
width. Clean joint interfaces by sandblasting or mechanical abrasion.
Blow out all loose particles with compressed air prior to sealing.
3.03 INSTALLATION
A. Melt hot-applied sealant in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions.
B. Observe application information and precautions
stated in manufacturer's literature.
C. Fill cracks and joints in asphaltic concrete flush to the surface
and strike off clean. Melt only enough material to be poured the same
day. Add material to the melter as the sealant is withdrawn during the
sealant operation.
D. At the end of each day's sealing operation, draw off all material
remaining in the melter and discard. Flush lines clean with SEALTIGHT
FLUSHING OIL.
3.04 PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK
A. Protect finished Work under provisions of Section
[01500].
